Winding Down

I used to find fall pretty depressing for all the obvious reasons: summer’s over, school starting, shorter days, colder weather. Then there are all the cliche life metaphors: the end of youth, the imminence of death. You feel all that life cycle stuff in a heightened way on the farm. The Summer is so full of energy and ridiculous vitality. Fall is (by definition) about decline. But summer on the farm is overwhelming too. Every time you turn around there are crops that need to be harvested NOW. And the weeds grow as fast or faster than the crops. The slowdown in fall is a huge relief in that way. There is at least a little time to think and plan, to consider lessons learned. Once we have time to digest things better, we’d
like to get together with everyone who is interested to talk about this season and thoughts for the next one.
